the LORD was sorry...

Pea na‘e fakatomala ‘a Sihova

Senesi 6 (Genesis 6)

(v. 6) And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

(v. 6) Pea na‘e fakatomala ‘a Sihova ‘i he‘ene ngaohi ‘a e tangata ‘i māmani, ‘o ne fakamamahi ‘i hono finangalo

*Commentary: The Reformation Bible*

sorry/regretted. Here is a reference to a change of attitude and action. There is no contradiction between this verse and passages teaching the changelessness (immutability) of God (Mal. 3:6, James 1:17) and that God does not change His mind (Num. 23:19; 1Sam. 15:29; Ps. 33:11; Is. 46:10). Remembering that this description is anthropopathic (God is depicted in terms of the human experience of knowledge and emotion), we must also recognize that the immutable and sovereign God deals appropriately with changes in human behavior. When people sin or repent of sin, He “changes His mind” with regard to the blessing or punishment appropriate to the situation (Ex. 32:12, 14; 1 Sam. 15:11; 2 Sam. 24:16; Jer. 18:11; Amos 7:3, 6) - all in accordance with His sovereign and eternal purposes. He works out all things according to the counsel of His will (Eph. 1:11). having ordained every change in human behavior as well as His response to it; thus, He never changes like we do on the basis of new information or unforeseen consequences. Because God is changeless in His being and eternally loyal to His covenant promises and unchanging decree, we can have firm confidence in Him who is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb 13:8).

GOD IS . . . (KO E ‘OTUA, ‘OKU . . )

Knowing God

The doctrine of God has fallen on hard times. Many are far more concerned about personal salvation than they are about God. Books on marriage abound, but books on the doctrine of God are few and far between. This is regrettable since nothing can ever really make sense to us in this life unless we have a good grasp of who God is.

To know God, we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind (Luke 10:27).

Kuo hangē kuo tuenoa´ ‘a e tokāteline ‘o e ‘Otua´. ‘Oku tokolahi ange ‘a e takitaha tokanga ki he ngaahi tokoni fakaekita´, ‘i he tokangaekina ‘a e ‘Otua´. ‘Oku fokoleta ‘a e ngaahi tohi fekauʻaki mo e nofo mali´, kae siʻisiʻi fau ha ngaahi tohi fekauʻaki mo e tokāteline ‘o e ‘Otua´. ‘Oku fakaloloma eni koeʻuhi´, ‘e ‘ikai pe ke ‘uhinga lelei ha meʻa ia kiate kitautolu ‘i he maama ko eni´, kapau ‘e ‘ikai ke tau maʻu ‘a e mahino feʻunga kau ki he ‘Otua´.

  1. First this is helping my vocabulary because I've never heard some of the words in today's lesson and I probably can't spell it either.
    Second.
The changing in decision based on the situatio:
It's like the contrast between the God in the old testament and New testament and how lenient he was with his people. Old testament: they disobey God and you die on the spot. New testament: you disobey God you have a second chance and that's because of Jesus.
Reminds me of parents and their kids. First child is always treated very strictly...nd the youngest gets away with everything.
I'm grateful that God change his mind and gave us the gift of Jesus so that we could be save from sin.

    1. Welcome to the Alpha Maama "faikava" hh - discussion section of our reading. Glad our devotional has much to offer - ako spelling mo vocab, theology etc. - thanks for commenting Peni pea malo e tokoni mei motu. Manatu'i, God doesn't change like us, he "changes" only with regard to our understanding of the word in order to allow us to see the results of our own actions. His plan to save man was determined from eternity. Glory to His Name.

  2. i mean its crazy how God “ deals appropriately with changes in human behavior” working out all things according to his council WHILE still remaining to be changeless. its just a crazy thing to think about because although the change between the old testament and new testament is seen and is shown throughout the bible , the foundational values and beliefs are still the same. but gotten to a different way. at least the way i look at it. i mean thats what it seems like its talking about..? nothing can make sense without a good grasp on who God is , really hits different tho. because it would explain why people go through super confusing times not knowing which foot to move forward. just something i gotta keep in mind more often when im down bad.

    1. Super crazy! And that's just fine with me. Any other way, would mean that "I" can fashion God in my own image - which would be abominable! Remember the "apparent" changes between old & new reveal only the unfolding plan of God. As Jesus told the Jews, prophets of old longed to see my day (Matt 13:17). What the Old showed dimly, the New revealed brightly in Jesus Christ. Read on. Press on young man - to know our Great God and to love Him dearly! Malo Lei.

  3. I can relate to this changing of appropriate actions based of actions done after anything that’s happened. As a supervisor I deal with a lot of attitudes and personalities and I’m not the most patient individual depending on what the situation is. When agents show remorse or come to apologize for their actions it lets me know how heavy of a corrective action they will receive.

I thank God that he forgives and that we serve a God that changes His mind when we repent for our sins. Imagine if we died from just one mistake? Or we were heavily punched for something that we mistakenly done? I am honored and appreciative to be blessed with a Forgiving and Patient God.

    1. Amen Peteli. Thanks for sharing. So true, our responses are but a reflection of our fallen human nature - but they do reflect the more perfect attributes of God; He is the ultimate in perfection and we only mirror (although imperfectly) his image stamped on us. California has the "3-strikes" law; and thank God he doesn't give us what we deserve (1 strike) but he is merciful and kind, extending time and opportunity for us to repent. Malo Sisu.

  4. I am absolutely loving all the sharing!! Yayy! Thanks for the shared youth! It’s beautiful to see and read the thought processes as they run through our heads. Tonight I got called out by a certain youth “person” for not completing my alpha ma’am response! Hah! Malo hono polisii e kau taki hhh. Accountability check at its finest! TYJ🙌 😃 As for today’s reading - I am struck right from the first phrase “The Lord was sorry” in my emotional response I am immediately ashamed - that I am the cause for my Lord’s grief and sadness and guilt take over that I personally with my choices caused His response. . . . I praise
God that the story doesn’t end there or this would be such a sad existence! But learning to scale back on the fanciful notions of what God does to fully understand WHO God is. . . It’s is a true act of obedience to reading and understanding His Word so that with every passing day, I understand HIM as our Creator better. Like one of the passages say here - “To know God we must love the Lord Our God with all our Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind )Luke 10:27 - thank you Father for Loving me enough to continue to Guide me with your Word🙏🏻

    1. Lol @ being called out. Yes, we "lead" by our examples, not by our "prodding", haha.. thank you for all that you do for ministry and our youth. Amen, to being broken over "sin" (personal & national) - as we look within and without - the total disregard for morality and fashioning god to fit a certain agenda. Lord have mercy on us! But praise be to His Name that His Holy Spirit still works to "call us to account" through convicting a sinful world as well as His own to repentance.
