The Heart of the Ten Commandments

Fehuʻi #8
Ko e hā ‘a e lao ‘a e ‘Otuá  ‘oku hiki ‘i he Fekau ‘e Hongofulú?

(What is the law of God stated in the Ten Commandments?)

‘Oua na‘a ai hao ‘Otua kehe, ‘o ua ‘aki au. ‘Oua te ke ngaohi ma‘au ha tamapua, pe ha momo‘i fakatātā ‘o ha me‘a ‘o e langi ‘i ‘olunga na, pe ‘o māmani ‘i lalo ni, pe ‘o e tahi ‘i lolofonua. ‘Oua te ke hū ki ai, pea ‘oua te ke tauhi ki ai. ‘Oua te ke takuanoa ‘a e huafa ‘o Sihova ko ho ‘Otua. Manatu ‘a e ‘aho Sāpate ke tauhi ia ke tapu. Faka‘apa‘apa ki ho‘o tamai mo ho‘o fa‘ē. ‘Oua na‘a ke fakapō. ‘Oua na‘a ke tono ‘unoho. ‘Oua na‘a ke kaiha‘a. ‘Oua na‘a ke tu‘u ko e fakamo‘oni loi. ‘Oua te ke manumanu.

(You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below – you shall not bow down to them or worship them. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You shall not covet.)

‘Ekisoto 20:3
‘Oua na‘a ai hao ‘Otua kehe, ‘o ua ‘aki Au.

Exodus 20:3
You shall have no other gods before Me.

Commentary – John Yates (cont…)

Na‘e ako‘i ‘e Sisu mo ne toe fakamahino‘i ha ngaahi ‘uhinga ‘oku toe loloto ange fekau‘aki mo e Fekau ‘e Hongofulú  ki he‘etau mo‘uí . ‘I he‘ene fakamatala‘i ‘a e Fekau ‘e Hongofulú ‘i he Koosipelí , na‘a ne hiki ‘a e  me‘afuá  fekau‘aki mo ‘etau mahino‘i ‘a e finangalo ‘o e ‘Otuá . Fakatātā; ‘ia Matiu 5:21, ‘oku hā ai ‘a e fakamatala ‘a Sisu ki he ‘uhinga ‘o e fekau ‘oku lave ki he tāmaté tangatá . Na‘á ne pehē, kapau ‘oku fehi‘a ha tokotaha ki hono tokouá , ‘e fakamaau‘i ‘a e tokotaha ko iá .

Ko e ‘uluaki fekau ‘e fāá ‘oku lave ia ki hotau vā mo e ‘Otuá pea na‘e fakamā‘opo‘opo ‘e Sisu ‘i he‘ene pehē; “Te ke ‘ofa ki he ‘Eiki ko ho ‘Otua, ‘o fai‘aki ‘a e kotoa ‘o ho loto, mo e kotoa ‘o ho laumālie, mo e kotoa ‘o ho ‘atamai.” Pea ko e fekau ‘e ono kimuí ‘oku fekau‘aki ia mo hotau vā mo e tangatá , pea na‘e fakamā‘opo‘opo ia ‘e Sisu ‘aki ‘a eni; Te ke ‘ofa ki ho kaungā‘api ‘o hangē ko ho‘o ‘ofa kiate koe” (Matiu 22:37, 39).

Jesus taught and clarified the deeper meaning of the Ten Commandments for us. As he explained the Ten Commandments in the Gospels, he raised the bar on our understanding of what God expects of us. For instance, in Matthew 5:21, Jesus explained the meaning of the commandment not to murder. He said that actually anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.

The first four commandments deal with our relatoionship with God, and Jesus summarized them as: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” The last six address our relationship with our fellow man, and Jesus summarized them as: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matt 22:37, 39).
