Part of God's plans for His covenant people included several festivals and holidays that served as a time for the people to gather together and worship God. All of the instructions God laid out for His people in Leviticus were intentional, and each of these festivals had important significance for their relationship with God. The Sabbath, which occurred weekly, was a day of rest and reflection meant to refocus the people's attention on God. The festivals celebrated God's redemption of His people from Egypt and His provisions for their physical and spiritual needs. The Day of Atonement contituted a day of self-denial in which the Israelites confessed their sins and the high priest made an atonement sacrifice. These special periods would also help the people remember God's acts of creation, deliverance, protection, and provision.

Jesus' words are very to-the-point. Jesus is for you, not against  you. He wants the best life for you. He wants your life to be rich and meaningful. If God is for you, who can be against you?

God, thank you for sending Jesus. He is the most meaningful gift I have ever received. I am so grateful that despite my shortcomings and failures, my life can be impactful because of the freedom you give me through Christ. OBSERVATION

This is quite possibly the most-quoted and most-memorized verse in the entire Bible. This may be due to the fact that if the entire Bible were whittled down to just one verse, this would be it. God sent Jesus so those who place their faith in Him can have  everlasting life in heaven with God.

APPLICATION

Jesus is not only the reason for the season, but He's the reason for life. When we realize that we are created for the purpose of a relationship with Him, no longer do we just honor Jesus during Christmas time, but we honor Him every day of the year through our words and our actions.

PRAYER

John the Baptist had faith that the ancient prophecies had come true with the arrival of Jesus. What stands out about John is the fact that he's willing to pave the way for the arrival of the Messiah rather than just pave the way to his own success. The best leaders are those capable of demonstrating humility.

Think of one way you can help pave the way for someone else to be successful. Their success will be your success.

SCRIPTURE

"The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." Romans 13:11

OBSERVATION

While ancient prophecies made about the coming of the Messiah likely caused a sense of hope for people, there was probably also a sense of restlessness wondering when-or if-God would ever show up.

All of a sudden when Jesus arrived, the prophecies from hundreds of years earlier were no longer just ancient texts-they were coming true in real time. The Messiah was no longer just a wish for the future, but was hope for the present.

Just like 2000 years ago, many people today have their doubts about Jesus, but will likely face a curveball when He

returns one day

APPLICATION

Jesus is salvation, which means that He saves. Saves from what? From the consequences of your sin. Your imperfect actions put you at odds with a perfect God. However, that same perfect God sent His perfect Son to pay for the mistakes you have made. Be thinking of someone you can invite to your church's Christmas service so they can hear this message of truth and hope.

PRAYER

God, place on my heart someone near me whom I know who

doesn't know you. I want to help share the good news with those around me. Amen

SCRIPTURE

"Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice of one calling: 'In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.'" Isaiah 40:1-3

OBSERVATION

Isaiah prophesies that the sins of Jerusalem will be paid in full. Notice, however, how the prophet prefaces his statement by first saying "speak tenderly to Jerusalem" Too many Christians force their views and faith on others rather than "speaking tenderly" to others. Peter later encourages the same concept for believers: "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." 1 Peter 3:15

APPLICATION

The grace that Jesus offers provides comfort to those who accept it. But remember to be gracious in delivering the good news with those who do not already have faith in God.

PRAYER

God, use me to be a light and encouragement to those around me-especially those who don't know you. Amen.
