(v. 11) In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover.

12:11 Your belt fastened. The story has arrived at a climactic moment, and the Hebrews must be ready to flee immediately. Their garments, which resemble loose skirts, must be tied up in preparation for a hasty departure.

LORD's Passover. The Passover observance is the oldest of the Jewish festivals and is celebrated at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month (12:6). It is described in many key OT texts in addition to ch. 12 (cf. 34:25; Lev. 23:5-8; Num. 9:1-14; 28:16-25;2 Chr. 30:1-9). It is immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which runs for the next seven days (the fifteenth through the twenty-first). Due to the hasty departure of the Israelites from Egypt, only the Passover is observed on this inaugural occasion. Later participants are garbed for travel to celebrate the exit of Israel from Egypt in haste and anxiety. The practice of ritual questions posed by the children during the Passover celebration is a later development rooted in vv.26,27.

The New Testament establishes a direct redemptive connection between the Passover and the death of Jesus, the supreme Passover Lamb who was sacrificed for those who believe (1 Cor. 5:7).
