The Lord was with Joseph

Pea na‘e kau ‘a Sihova mo Siosifa

Senesi 39 (Genesis 39)

(v. 2) The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

(v. 2) Pea na‘e kau ‘a Sihova mo Siosifa, pea ko e tangata fai tāpuekina ia; pea na‘a ne taka ‘i he fale ‘o hono ‘eiki ko e ‘Isipite

*Commentary: The Reformation Study Bible*

The Lord was with Joseph. This repeated formula provides the theological theme of the story (vv.3,21,23), and the link between Joseph and the patriarchs (28.15, cf. Acts 19). God’s beneficent presence is experienced even in the slavery he endures outside the land of blessing.

*Tohi Vete: Tohitapu Ako ‘o e Fakalelei-Lotu´*

na‘e kau ‘a Sihova mo Siosifa. Ko e fakalea ko eni´, ‘oku´ ne fakatoka e makatuʻunga ki he kaveinga faka-teolosia ki he talanoa fungani ko eni´ (veesi 3, 21, 23) pea mo e afo ‘oku´ ne haʻi ‘a Siosifa ki he kau Peteliake´ (28:15; Ngaue 19). Ko e fakamalumalu fakakoloa ‘a e ‘Otua´ naʻe tofanga pe ai ‘a Siosifa ‘o aʻu ki he fale pōpula´, neongo naʻa´ ne mamaʻo mei he fonua ‘o e talaʻofa´.

GOD IS . . . (KO E ‘OTUA, ‘OKU . . )

GOD IS TRIUNE

Application

In relation to the Son, we commune with him in grace: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Cor. 13:14). The one who is "full of grace and truth” (John 1:14), the Lord Jesus Christ, is the one who showers us with his grace: "For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace" (John 1:16). We enjoy Christ, the God-man, and we meditate not only on the grace given to us because of his work but also on the grace given to us because of who he is (i.e., his person). The greatness of Christ's person far excels even the benefits we receive from his work for us.

KO E ‘OTUA, ‘OKU / KO E ...

Ko e ‘Otua´ ko e Tolu-ʻi he-Taha

Ko ‘ene fekauʻaki mo kitautolu´

‘I he fekauʻaki mo e ‘Alo´, ‘oku tau feohi mo ia fou ‘i he kelesi´: “Ko e kelesi ‘a e ‘Eiki ko Sīsū Kalaisi, mo e ‘ofa ‘a e ‘Otua, mo e feohi ‘o e Laumālie Mā‘oni‘oni, ‘ofa ke ‘iate kimoutolu kotoa pē ia” (2 Kol 13:13). Ko e Tokotaha ‘o e “fonu ‘i he kelesi mo e moʻoni” (Sione 1:14), ‘a e ‘Eiki ko Sisu Kalaisi´, ko e tokotaha pe ia ‘oku ne tapuakiʻi kitautolu ‘aki ‘ene kelesi´: “He na‘a tau ma‘u kotoa pē mei he‘ene fonu ko ia, ‘io, ‘o taufetongi he kelesi mo ha kelesi” (Sione 1:16). ‘Oku tau kai mo inu ‘ia Kalaisi, ‘a e ‘Otua-mo-tangata´, pea ‘oku tau laulotoa, ‘o ‘ikai ngata pe ‘i he kelesi ‘oku tau maʻu ‘i he ngaue naʻa´ ne feia´, ka ‘i he kelesi kuo foaki kiate kitautolu ‘i hono tuʻunga pe ‘oʻona´ (‘i hono pesona´). 1. The Lord was with Joseph and the Lord made the works of his hands prosper. Joseph found favor before God and men despite being a slave because the Lord was with him. The same can apply to us. Our situations does not define us nor our destinations when the Lord is with us.

  2. Joseph completely entrusted himself in God & in Gods work on his behalf. Even in the midst of such a great betrayal committed by his own kin "Na'e Kau 'a Sihova mo Siosifa". God was in Joseph. Because of this Joseph found complete victory over the temptation in the advances attempted by Potiphers wife. God prospered Joseph because Joseph completely loved and trusted the Lord .

Oh to be completely surrendered to God and His will! Regardless of the circumstances.

  3. God got us!!!

Those who live in the shadow of the Lord will experience God working through their lives like He did in Joseph’s life!!

    1. Yes - on “that day” - we long to hear “well done, good and faithful servant”

  5. What a contrast between Judah (Chap 38) and Joseph (Chap 39) - Promiscuity vs. Integrity. Self gratification vs. Self-control. Flesh vs. Spirit. Hypocrisy (Judah wanting Tamar to be burned) vs. Uprightness. Judah was quick to lay blame and judge Tamar; Joseph was silent before his accusers. He was like a lamb in the hands of his shearer. Joseph served in quiet humility. God was with him the whole time. Judah would be made "silent" by the presence of the items he gave to Tamar as pledge. Joseph would be vindicated in the end but he would descend to the pit of the prison before rising to finally speak before Pharaoh.

  6. Verse 10 is a great example of how the enemy never stops tempting us and how we have to arm ourselves to be able to fight those temptations off like Joseph did. If we don’t spend time in the word, in prayer, and completely put our faith and trust in God, that’s just like inviting sin and temptation into your life. I’m really just speaking to myself at this point because I have been slacking in spending time in the word and I can feel myself being further from God. But I am reminded today that no matter whether I am at the highest point of my life, or the lowest like when Joseph was in prison, God is still with me. I find peace and comfort in knowing that, and I will try to my best to spend time in the word and in prayer to fight off the temptations of this world.

    1. Yes, “he would not listen to her”! In the Garden, Eve listened to the devil - we see here, an example of strength in Joseph - “Not listening” - we listen only to the voice of God that comes through His Word! Leads to life & blessing!

  7. The winning formula I like to call it. Us+God=winning. Simple as that. We hear it all the time from our parents and see it time and time again in the Bible. If God is with us who can be against.
If we include God in every aspect of our lives, Mind, body and soul, then whatever our endeavours in life it is sure to be successful. You will get tested along the way to see if you still with him but know this he is always with us just waiting to be invited to be part our daily lives.

    1. Malie formula 1 😀 🏁 winning sometimes looks like losing - Joseph lost his brothers (as they sold him); lost his position; his reputation; his identity (Hebrew slave in a foreign land)

But as you stated - he never lost his faith and God never abandoned him. When things go all so wrong - we cling to His promises! Joseph was 17 when he was sold as a slave. He was 30 when be stood before Pharaoh. God was “with him” and sustained him all the way through 🙏🏽
