DIVINE GRACE

KO E KELESI ‘A E ‘OTUA

EPHESIANS 2:4-5

Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions is by grace you have been saved.

‘EFESO 2:4-5

Ka ko e ‘Otua, ‘a ia ‘oku ne mohu ‘alo‘ofa, ko e me‘a ‘i he ‘ofa lahi ‘a ia na‘a ne ‘ofeina ‘aki ‘a kitautolu, neongo kuo tau mate ‘i he ngaahi talangata‘a, na‘a ne kaungā fakamo‘ui hake kitautolu mo Kalaisi, (ko e kelesi pē kuo mou mo‘ui mei ai),

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Behold, this divine promise of grace and forgiveness of sin is rightly called "the Gospel." And I say here again that by the Gospel you must by no means understand anything else than the divine promise of God's grace and His forgiveness of sin. For thus it was that Paul's epistles were never understood, nor can they be understood by the papists, because they do not know what the Law and the Gospel really mean. They hold Christ to be a lawmaker, and the Gospel a mere doctrine of a new law. That is nothing else than locking up the Gospel and entirely concealing it.

Now, the word Gospel is of Greek origin and signifies in German Frohliche Botschaft, that is, glad tidings, because it proclaims the blessed doctrine of life eternal by divine promise, and offers grace and forgiveness of sin. Therefore, works do not belong to the Gospel, as it is not a law; only faith belongs to it, as it is altogether a promise and an offer of divine grace.

THE SPIRIT ENLIGHTENS

‘OKU FAKAMAAMA ‘A E LAUMALIE

ACTS 3:19

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

NGAUE 3:19

Ko ia mou fei mo fakatomala, pea tafoki, koe‘uhi ke tāmate‘i ho‘omou ngaahi angahala; kae toki hoko mei he fofonga ‘o e ‘Eiki ‘a e ngaahi kuonga fakamānava hake.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Repentance of sin is as truly the work of grace as the making from first to last, is of grace alone. It is not the Holy Spirit who repents. He has never done anything for which He should repent. We must ourselves repent of our own sin, or we are not saved from its power. It is not the Lord Jesus Christ who repents. What should He repent of? We ourselves repent with the full consent of every faculty of our mind.

The will, the affections, the emotions all work together most heartily in the blessed act of repentance for sin; and yet at the back of all that there is a secret holy influence which melts the heart, gives contrition, and produces a complete change. The Spirit of God enlightens us to see what sin is, and also turns us toward holiness, makes us heartily to appreciate, love, and desire it, and thus gives us the impetus by which we are led onward from stage to stage of sanctification.

GOD'S PLEASURE: SAVING SINNERS

KO E MOKOI ‘A E ‘OTUA: KE FAKAMO’UI ‘A KAU ANGAHALA

ISAIAH 42:3

A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth.

ISAIAH 42:3

Ko e kofe kuo foa ‘e ‘ikai te ne laiki, pea ko e vavae ‘oku kohu ‘e ‘ikai te ne tāmate‘i: te ne fai mo‘oni ‘ene fakahoko ‘a e fakamaau.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

The Law is a mirror to show a person what he is like, a sinner who is guilty of death, and worthy of everlasting punishment. What is this bruising and beating by the hand of the Law to accomplish? This, that we may find the way to grace. God is the God of the humble, the miserable, the afflicted. It is His nature to exalt the humble, to comfort the sorrowing, to heal the brokenhearted, to justify the sinners, and to save the condemned. The fatuous idea that a person can be holy by himself denies God the pleasure of saving sinners.

God must therefore first take the sledgehammer of the Law in His fists and smash the beast of self-righteousness and its brood of self-confidence, self-wisdom, self-righteousness, and self-help. When the conscience has been thoroughly frightened by the Law it welcomes the Gospel of grace with its message of a Savior who came into the world, not to break the bruised reed, nor to quench the smoking flax, but to preach glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, and to grant forgiveness of sins to all the captives.

A MIRACLE OF GRACE

KO E NGAUE FAKAOFO ‘O E KELESI

1 PETER 1:23

You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

1 PITA 1:23

He kuo fakatupufo‘ou kimoutolu, kae ‘ikai ‘aki ‘a e tenga ‘auha, ka ‘aki ‘a e tenga ta‘e‘auha, ‘o fou ‘i he folofola ‘a e ‘Otua ‘a ia ‘oku mo‘ui mo tolonga.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

The Lord knows right well that you cannot change your own heart, and cannot cleanse your own nature; but He also knows that He can do both. He can cause the Ethiopian to change his skin, and the leopard his spots. Hear this, and be astonished: He can create you a second time; He can cause you to be born again. This is a miracle of grace, but the Holy Ghost will perform it.

It would be a very wonderful thing if one could stand at the foot of the Niagara Falls, and could speak a word which should make the river Niagara begin to run upstream, and leap up that great precipice over which it now rolls in stupendous force. Nothing but the power of God could achieve that marvel; but that would be more than a fit parallel to what would take place if the course of your nature were altogether reversed. All things are possible with God. He can make your whole being tend upward toward God.

GRACE COMES TO HELP

‘OKU HA’U ‘A KELESI KE TOKONI

ROMANS 5:21 NKJV

so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

LOMA 5:21

Koe‘uhi ke hangē na‘e Hau ‘a Angahala ‘i he mate, pehē foki ke Hau ‘a Kelesi mei he fakatonuhia, ‘o iku ki he mo‘ui ta‘engata, ‘ia Sīsū Kalaisi ko hotau ‘Eiki.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Grace has superabounded. After sin has held men sunk in ruin, grace then comes to help; for He teaches us that the the abundance of grace becomes for this reason more illustrious: while sin is overflowing, (grace) pours itself forth so exuberantly that it not only overcomes the flood of sin, but wholly absorbs it. And we may hence learn that our condemnation is not set before us in the Law that we may abide in it, but that having fully known our misery, we may be led to Christ, who is sent to be a Physician to the sick, a Deliverer to the captives, a Comforter to the afflicted, a Defender to the oppressed (Isaiah 61:1).

As sin is said to be the sting of death, and as death has no power over men, except on account of sin, so sin executes its power by death: it is hence said to exercise thereby its dominion. In the last clause the order of the words is deranged, but yet not without reason. The simple contrast might have been thus formed, “That righteousness may reign through Christ."

THE COVENANT OF GRACE

KO E KOVINANITE ‘O E KELESI

JAMES 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

JAMES 4:6

Ka ‘oku lahi ange ai ‘ene foaki kelesi. Ko ia ai, ‘oku ne pehē, ‘Oku tali teke‘i ‘e he ‘Otua ‘a e ‘afungi, ka ‘oku ne foaki kelesi ki he anga vaivai.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Remember that the Lord Jesus came to take away sin in three ways: He came to remove the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and, at last, the presence of sin. At once you may reach to the second may immediately be broken; and so you will be on the road to the third, namely, the removal of the presence of sin. "We know that he was manifested to take away our sins." The angel said of our Lord, “Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins” Our Lord Jesus came to destroy in us the works of the devil. That which was said at our Lord's birth was also declared in His death; for when the soldier pierced His side forthwith came there out blood and water, to set forth the double cure by which we are delivered from the guilt and the defilement of sin.

If, however, you are troubled about the power of sin, and about the tendencies of your nature, as you well may be, here is a promise for you. Have faith in it, for it stands in that covenant of grace which is ordered in all things and sure.

GOD'S GRACE SET FORTH

KO E HONO TUKU MAI ‘O E KELESI ‘A E ‘OTUA

ROMANS 5:17

If, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

ROMANS 5:17

He kapau na‘e Hau ‘a Mate ‘i he faihala ‘a e toko taha, pea founga ‘ene Hau ‘i he toko taha ko ia; huanoa ‘enau Hau ‘i he mo‘ui, ‘e kinautolu ‘oku ma‘u hono lahi faufau ‘o e kelesi, mo e me‘a‘ofa ko e fakatonuhia, ko e fou ‘enau Hau ‘i he toko taha ko Sīsū Kalaisi.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

The grace of God might be worthily set forth, that men might be led from self-confidence to trust in Christ, that having obtained His grace they might enjoy full assurance; and hence at length arises gratitude. The sum of the whole is this: that Christ surpasses Adam; the sin of one is overcome by the righteousness of the other; the curse of one is effaced by the grace of the other; from one, death has proceeded, which is absorbed by the life which the other bestows.

But the parts of this comparison do not correspond; instead of adding "the gift of life shall more fully reign and flourish through the exuberance of grace," (Paul) says that "the faithful shall reign," which amounts to the same thing; for the reign of the faithful is in life, and the reign of life is in the faithful.

COME AS YOU ARE

HA’U PE ‘I HE TU’UNGA PE ‘OKU KE ‘I AI

ROMANS 4:5

To the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

LOMA 4:5

Ka ka ‘ilonga ha taha ‘oku ‘ikai ngāue, ka ‘oku ne tui falala kiate ia ‘oku ne fakatonuhia ‘a e faka‘otuamate, ‘oku lau ‘a e tui ‘a‘ana ma‘ane mā‘oni‘oni.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Wait not for reformation, but come at once for salvation. God justifieth the ungodly, and that takes you up where you now are: it meets you in your worst estate. Come to your heavenly Father in all your sin and sinfulness. Come to Jesus just as you are, leprous, filthy, naked, neither fit to live nor fit to die. Come, you that are the very sweepings of creation; come, though you hardly dare to hope for anything but death. Come, though despair is brooding over you, pressing upon your bosom like a horrible nightmare. Come and ask the Lord to justify another ungodly one.

Why should He not? Come, for this great mercy of God is meant for such as you are. I put it in the language of the text, and I cannot put it more strongly: the Lord God Himself takes to Himself this gracious title, "Him that justifieth the ungodly." He makes just, and causes to be treated as just, those who by nature are ungodly. Is not that a wonderful word for you?

GRACE: THE FRUIT OF MERCY

KO E KELESI´: KO E FUA ‘O E MEESI´

EPHESIANS 4:7

But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

‘EFESO 4:7

Ka na‘e foaki kelesi kiate kitautolu tāutaha, ‘o fakafuofua ki he lahi ‘o e me‘a‘ofa ‘a Kalaisi.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

Grace is properly set in opposition to offense; the gift which proceeds from grace, to death. Hence grace means the free goodness of God or gratuitous love, of which He has given us a proof in Christ that He might relieve our misery: and gift is the fruit of this mercy, and hath come to us, even the reconciliation by which we have obtained life and salvation, righteousness, newness of life, and every other blessing.

We hence see how absurdly the schoolmen have defined grace, who have taught that it is nothing else but a quality infused into the hearts of men. For grace, properly speaking, is in God; and what is in us is the effect of grace. And [Paul] says that it is by one Man; for the Father has made Him the Fountain out of whose fullness all must draw. And thus he teaches us that not even the least drop of life can be found out of Christ that there is no other remedy for our poverty and want than what He conveys to us from His own abundance.

THE SYSTEM OF GRACE

KO E PALANI ‘O E KELESI´

LUKE 19:10

The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

LUKE 19:10

He na‘e ha‘u ‘a e Fanautama ‘a Tangata ke kumi mo fakamo‘ui ‘a ia kuo mole.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

I say that the Lord of love had just such as you are in His eye when He arranged the system of grace. Suppose a man of generous spirit were to resolve to forgive all those who were indebted to him; it is clear that this can only apply to those really in his debt. Each one has but to have his bill receipted, and the liability is wiped out. But the most generous person cannot forgive the debts of those who do not owe him anything. It is out of the power of omnipotence to forgive where there is no sin.

Pardon, therefore, cannot be for you who have no sin. Pardon must be for the guilty. Forgiveness must be for the sinful. It were absurd to talk of forgiving those who do not need forgiveness-pardoning those who have never offended. Do think you must be lost because you are a sinner? This is the reason why you can be saved. Because you own yourself to be a sinner, I would encourage you to believe that grace is ordained for such as you are.

GRATUITOUS MERCY

KO E MEESI OPE ATU

GENESIS 6:9

These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.

SENESI 6:9

Ko e tohi eni ‘o e hako ‘o Noa. Ko Noa ko e tangata angatonu: na‘a ne haohaoa pe ‘i he ngaahi to‘utangata na‘e fe‘unga mo ia: na‘e takaua ‘a Noa mo e ‘Otua.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

“Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." This is a Hebrew phrase, which signifies that God was propitious to him, and favored him. For so the Hebrews are accustomed to speak: "If I have found grace in Thy sight" instead of "If I am acceptable to Thee" or "If Thou wilt grant me thy benevolence or favor." Which phrase requires to be noticed, because certain unlearned men infer with futile subtlety that if men find grace in God's sight, it is because they seek it by their own industry and merits. I acknowledge, indeed, that here Noah is declared to have been acceptable to God, because, by living uprightly and holily, he kept himself pure from the common pollutions of the world; whence, however, did he attain this integrity, but from the preventing grace of God? The commencement, therefore, of this favor was gratuitous mercy. Afterwards, the Lord, having once embraced him, retained him under His own hand, lest he should perish with the rest of the world.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe

May I urge upon any who have no good thing about them - who fear that they have not even a good feeling, or anything whatever that can recommend them to God - that they will firmly believe that our gracious God is able and willing to take them without anything to recommend them, and to forgive them spontaneously, not because they are good, but because He is good.

Does He not make His sun to shine on the evil as well as on the good? Does He not give fruitful seasons, and send the rain and the sunshine in their time upon the most ungodly nations? Ay, even Sodom had its sun, and Gomorrah had its dew. Oh friend, the great grace of God surpasses my conception and your conception, and I would have you think worthily of it! As high as the heavens are above the earth; so high are God's thoughts above our thoughts. He can abundantly pardon. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners: forgiveness is for the guilty.
