“The Last Adam”
45 And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.”
The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from
heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:45, 47)
God’s Broken Image
Salvation
What we discussed last time is the essence of the salvation Christ
provides, and it undergirds the pattern of Christian experience and doctrine
which we find in the New Testament (Romans 8:29). But how is such a salvation
provided by Christ?
1) He came into the world as the
second man, the last Adam
(1 Corinthians 15:45, 47).
Just as those who are in Adam die because of his sin imputed to them, so
also those
who are in Christ live because of his righteousness imputed to them.
Just as it is not at root the personal sinning of those in Adam that brought
their condemnation, so it is not at root the personal goodness of those who are
in Christ that brings their justification. The point of saying right here that
Adam is a pattern of Christ is to signal that justification comes to
us not on the ground of our obedience, but on the ground of Christ's
obedience and our union with him by faith alone.
Challenge: There’s a
saying, “I don’t know you from Adam.”
It means the person you are referring to is unknown. But as Christ comes as the
2nd and last Adam, we rejoice for He sought us out to save us even though
we were unknown (to man), a stranger and even an “enemy” of the Most High.
