THE WORD OF GOD ABIDES

ISAIAH 40:8

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

When I first took over the defense of the Gospel, I remembered what a colleague said to me; “I like it well”, he said, “that the doctrine which you proclaim gives glory to God alone and none to man. For never can too much glory, goodness, and mercy be ascribed unto God.” These words of the worthy doctor comforted and confirmed me. The Gospel is true because it deprives men of all glory, wisdom, and righteousness and turns over all honor to the Creator alone. It is safer to attribute too much glory unto God than unto man.

You may argue that the church and the fathers are holy. Yet the church is compelled to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses." I am not to be believed, nor is the church to be believed, or the fathers, or the apostles, or an angel from heaven, if they teach anything contrary to the Word of God. Let the Word of God abide forever.

    Isaiah 40:1-11 is a message of comfort for God's people.
    L- lesson
    Theme- The word of God endures forever.
    Aim - we have to give God the Glory and praise and he alone shall inherit such honor for such was the word written.

    O- ontology
    the doctrine was written to give glory to God and God alone and not to man. As advance and powerful the human race has become Isaiah says that all will wither and die like the flowers and grass but the word will stand forever. We have to take our eyes and focus from us and direct it towards God as it was intended to be. To God be the Glory.

    W - worship
    Malo Sisu ho'o ngaohi au. Na'ake ngaohi au ke makehe ange ha toe fktupu koeuhi ke fakalangilangi'i a'e Afiona. Ke mu'omu'a koe ka'e kimui au. Ke 'o 'o u 'a e kololia moe langilangi o taengata emeni.

  2. P - plot : Isaiah 40:3-9 surveillance of the landscape. In our key verse for today v 8 - we have words that depict nature

    “grass” & “flower” - going back to verses 3-9 let’s list all the landscape (nature) words we find:

    ~ wilderness, desert, highway v.3
    ~ mountain, ground, plain v4
    ~ grass, flower v.6
    ~ grass, flower v.7
    ~ grass, flower v.8
    ~ mountain v.9

    Let’s Do an exercise. Read these verses, Isaiah 40:3-11. Pay attention to all the nature language through our Key verse 8 - when you continue reading verses 9-11, what do you notice? Do you see a shift? See the description of the nature in vs 3 - 8 - the Word of God being the central focus - after 8; then what?

    1. I noticed there was a shift to 2nd person narrative? There is a difference in tone. An encouragement and a reiteration of the Lord and his power.

  4. Before v.9 it was meek,fragile
    and soft tone. Very depressing. flowers fade and grass dying.
    V 10-11
    Bold, extravagant, loud and in your face
    Mountaintops.
    It is a tone of excitement and joy in anticipation as if waiting for an event to happen or a loved one to arrive. You are about to tell everyone and anyone.
    There's good news. As the verse says it is the arrival of God and he brings with him his rewards.

    1. Yes! The Word of God is central. Its the only permanent enduring entity. For it is eternal, as God is eternal.

      The natural world is temporary and fades & dies! The mighty mountains will be brought low! The valleys must be leveled. The beautiful flowers and lush greens will be no more! Why? Because heaven & earth will all pass away!! God’s Word will remain!

      After the declaration, verses 9 and following - the mountains will be a platform for the proclamation of this mighty truth!! Hopeful message of God’s power to deliver His people from the collapse of nature, governments, etc… man’s ultimate refuge is God alone!!
