A VIEW OF PROVIDENCE

KO E PALOVITENISI ‘A E ‘OTUA

PSALM 33:8

Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him

SAAME 33:8

Ke manavahē ‘a e fonua kotoa kia Sihova: Ke teki ‘iate ia ‘a e nofo māmani kotoa

Sola Scriptura - Scripture Alone - Ko e Folofola´ pe

In the Bible, we have an account of the whole scheme of Providence, from the beginning of the world to the end of it, either in history or prophecy, and are told what will become of things at last; how they will issue in the subduing of God's enemies, and in the salvation and glory of His church, and setting up of the everlasting kingdom of His Son.

How rational, worthy, and excellent a revelation is this! And how excellent a book is the Bible, which contains so much beyond all other books in the world! And what characters are here of its being indeed a divine Book! A Book that the great Jehovah has given to mankind for their instruction, without which we should be left in miserable darkness and confusion. From what has been said, we may see the glorious majesty and power of God in this affair of redemption.

Because God is our Providence he’s allowing the earth to fear him. God controls everything on this earth. And he’s also giving us the opportunity as people meaning every single person in the world to respect him. This just means while we have the time God is allowing sinners or anyone to just turn back to him while we have the chance to worship & honor him.

  2. Let all--- includes everyone
    the earth--- all of humankind
fear--- intense anxiety, emotions that alert us to danger, response or reaction,
    the LORD---- our creator
    let all--- everyone
the people of the world--- all of humankind
    revere him--- respect
    Providence--- God's care and protection

I didn't understand the words today even after reading through. I tried reading the verses before and after and still no luck. If he is our Providence I understand that we have to Revere him but why must we fear him in the context of the verse only? I guess I'm looking at it as I'm serving out of fear instead of free will.
I may be looking at it different from what it is intended. From my experience if we do things out of fear it becomes a to do list instead of doing it because it's the right thing and wanting to because of the benefits. Are we true to ourselves or we just blindly following?
In general as a Christian I understand why we should fear God but applying to just this verse alone doesn't make sense to me.

    1. Yes, the Psalms are collections of poetry. One of the things I wanted to cover (and will do in the future) is identifying the "types" of writing we are dealing with. "Context" is the "overall topic or subject" the passage is dealing with. If you wanted to get a better idea of today's verse - you would actually read to entire Psalm - what topic is it referring to? In the beginning verses, the Psalmist is praising God with singing and instruments. Why? For His Word and works! What works? Read on and you will find out... creation!

So Providence is God's sovereign provisions for His people!

As for fear.. context of fear here, is the "awe inspiring respect of the Most High" - Manavahe - the fear of disappointing the One you love. Not necessarily, the punishment - The Christian is (or should be) motivated by LOVE!

  3. The fear of disappointing the one you love makes sense. We have great respect for God because of the tremendous care and protection he gives us, and because of that, we don't want to disappoint him. It's a fear out of gratitude instead of punishment.
Thank you for clarifying that for me.
