What a precious treasure God has committed into our hands, in that He has given us the Bible. How little do most persons consider what a privilege they enjoy in the possession of that holy Book, the Bible, which they have in their hands, and may converse with as they please.

What an excellent book is this, and how far exceeding all human writings! It reveals God to us and gives us a view of the grand design and glorious scheme of Providence from the beginning of the world, either in history or prophecy. It reveals the great Redeemer, His glorious redemption, and the various steps by which God accomplishes it from the first foundation to the top-stone!

Shall we prize a history which gives us a clear account of some great earthly prince or mighty warrior? And shall we not prize the history that God gives us of the glorious kingdom of His Son, Jesus Christ, the Prince and Saviour, and of the great transactions of that King of kings, and Lord of armies, the Lord mighty in battle; and what He has wrought for the redemption of His chosen people?

Go, therefore, and speak in His name. When you have done stating a doctrine, command your hearers, in the name of Jesus, to believe it. Be daring enough for that.

Let us say again, my brothers, that if God sent His servants the prophets every morning to speak to Jerusalem according to His heart, and to declare His will, He has not withheld from us the same advantage. If Jerusalem had honored the presence of the Lord Jesus, who usually stayed there while in the days of His flesh, may we not boast of a similar privilege? I know well that we cannot see Him anymore with our natural eyes, and that He no longer appears visibly on earth since His ascension. But can we doubt that He was, and still is, with us in our midst by the saving effects of His grace present in His Word, present in His sacraments, present in His governing providence and in a thousand other blessings that He heaps upon us every day?

Whatever your special need may be, you may readily find some promise in the Bible suited to it. Are you faint and feeble because your way is rough and you are weary? Here is the promise: “He giveth power to the faint.” (Isa 40:29). When you read such a promise, take it back to the great Promiser, and ask Him to fulfill His own Word.

Are you seeking after Christ, and thirsting for closer communion with Him? This promise shines like a star upon you—“Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." Take that promise to the throne continually; do not plead anything else, but go to God over and over again with this—“Lord, Thou hast said it, do as Thou hast said." Are you  distressed because of sin, and burdened with the heavy load of your iniquities? Listen to these words—"I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions, and will no more remember thy sins.” You have no merit of your own to plead why He should pardon you, but plead His written engagements and He will perform them.

The Lord Jesus condescended to become a Preacher of the Gospel, and He was not ashamed to exercise His calling before an audience of two persons, neither does He now refuse to become the Teacher of even one. Let us court the company of so excellent an Instructor, for till He is made unto us wisdom we shall never be wise unto salvation.

This unrivalled Tutor used as His class-book the best of books. Although able to reveal fresh truth, He preferred to expound the old. He knew by His omniscience what was the most instructive way of teaching, and by turning at once to Moses and the prophets, He showed us that the surest road to wisdom is not speculation, reasoning, or reading human books, but meditation upon the Word of God.

The Father gives us His promises, the Son signs them in His blood, and the Holy Spirit seals them with His signet. The Father ordains salvation to us, the Son acquires it, and the Holy Spirit applies it. The Father adopts us to be His children, the Son purchases us to be His members, and the Holy Spirit regenerates us to be His temples. So we become objects of the love of these three adorable persons, and as the Father takes particular care of us as His children, the Son and the Holy Spirit give themselves to us with all their graces.

Jesus Christ is our Surety to make satisfaction for us, our Head to give us life, our Prophet to promise us salvation in His Word, our Priest to merit it by His blood, and our King to apply it to us by His power. The written Word of God is the main instrument employed by Christ in order to carry on His work of redemption in all ages. There was a necessity of the Word of God being committed to writing, for a steady rule to God's church. Before this, the church had the Word by tradition, either by immediate tradition from eminent men inspired, that were living, or else by tradition from former generations, which might be had with tolerable certainty in ages preceding this, by reason of men's long lives.

But the distance from the beginning of things was become now so great, and the lives of men become so short-being brought down to the present standard about the time of Moses-and God having now separated a nation to be a peculiar people, to be the keepers of the oracles of God; God saw it to be a convenient time now to commit His Word to writing, to remain henceforward for a steady rule throughout all ages.

We should be abler teachers of others, and less liable to be carried about by every wind of doctrine, if we sought to have a more intelligent understanding of the Word of God. As the Holy Ghost, the Author of the Scriptures, is He who alone can enlighten us rightly to understand them, we should constantly ask His teaching, and His guidance into all truth.

When Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream, what did he do? He set himself to earnest prayer that God would open up the vision. The apostle John, in his vision at Patmos, saw a book sealed with seven seals which none was found worthy to open, or so much as to look upon. The book was afterwards opened by the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who had prevailed to open it; but it is written first—"I wept much.” The tears of John, which were his liquid prayers, were, so far as he was concerned, the sacred keys by which the folded book was opened.

When you preach the Word of God in its purity and also live accordingly, it is not your own doing, but God’s doing.  And when people praise you, they really mean to praise God in you. When you understand this — and you should because "what hast thou that thou didst not receive?" (1 Cor 4:7) - you will not flatter yourself on the one hand and on the other hand you will not carry yourself with the thought of resigning from the ministry when you are insulted, reproached, or persecuted.

It is really kind of God to send so much infamy, reproach, hatred, and cursing our way to keep us from getting proud of the gifts of God in us. The Lord is our glory. Such gifts as we possess we acknowledge to be the gifts of God, given to us for the good of the church of Christ.

Therefore we are not proud because of them. We know that God is no respecter of persons. A plain factory hand who does his work faithfully pleases God just as much as a minister of the Word.
