After the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew's Gospel returns to Jesus' ministry, which was marked by miraculous healings and wonders. Matthew 8 records three miracles of healing that demonstrated slightly different aspects of Jesus' power. The cleansing of the leper demonstrated Jesus' power over one of the worst diseases of the day. The healing of the centurion's servant showed that Jesus did not need to be physically present to heal. At Capernaum, Jesus cast out demons, which
demonstrated His sovereign power over evil.

After those healings, Jesus illustrated the true nature of discipleship. True discipleship is defined by trust in Jesus, no matter what the circumstances may be. The next two miracles, the calming of the storm and the two men possessed by multiple demons, demonstrate Jesus' power over nature itself and over the most extensive and entrenched evil. The complete picture of Jesus' power on display in Matthew 8 shows that, through Christ, the God of the universe transforms individual lives.

Relationships are the focus of the next section of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches that His kingdom people are not to be judgmental and condemning of others. The loving relationship we enjoy with God sets the standard for our relationships with others. Jesus also taught that prayer is the primary way we function in relationship with God, and He wants us to continually approach Him with our requests. He delights to give us what we need. Jesus specifically teaches that our prayers are powerful when we are persistent, when we believe God's promise, and when we trust God's heart.

Jesus' sermon builds to a climactic ending in chapter 7, when He challenged His listeners to make a choice - would they follow Him through the narrow gate into the Kingdom, or would they choose the wide gate that leads to ultimate destruction? The true Christian is marked by obedience that flows from a real, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Pehē foki, ke ulo atu ho‘omou maama ke hā ki he kakai, ke nau mamata ki ho‘omou ngaahi ngāue lelei, pea fakamālō‘ia ‘a ho‘omou Tamai ‘oku ‘i Hēvani.

MEMORY VERSE: MATTHEW 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

‘I he hokoatu ‘a e Malanga ‘a Sisu ‘i he mo’unga, na’a ne ako fekau’aki pea mo e ngaahi ‘ulungaanga pe to’onga fakalotu – foaki, lotu, pea mo e  ‘aukai - ko e ngaahi to’onga founga  lotu ko eni ‘oku malava pe ke fai ‘i ha founga lelei pe ‘i ha loto ‘oku hala.  Ko e loto fehalaaki ‘oku fai’aki ‘a e ngaahi to’onga lotu ko eni, ko e ni’ihi ‘oku nau kumi ke tokangaekina kinautolu ka ko e to’onga pe ngaue fakalotu ‘oku totonu ‘oku nau siofi ‘a e mo’ui feilaulau pea mo e hu ki he ‘Otua.  ‘Oku kau heni ‘a e fakahinohino ‘a Sisu fekau’aki pea mo e sipinga ‘o e lotu, pea ko e fakahinohino eni ki he mahu’inga ‘o e hu ki he ‘Otua, ‘aki ‘ete fakatonutonu kita ki he finangalo ‘o e  ‘Otua pea mo e tuku kakato ‘ete falala kiate Ia fekau’aki mo ‘ete ngaahi fiema’u faka’aho fakalaumalie mo fakasino.  Ko e toenga ‘o e vahe 6 ‘o e tohi Matiu ‘oku tokanga ia ki he’ete sivi ‘a e ngaahi me’a ‘oku mahu’inga ‘i he mo’ui, ‘i he vakai fekau’aki pea mo e pule’anga ‘o e ‘Otua.  Na’e tokanga ‘a Sisu ki he’etau loto mo’ua mo ‘etau tailiili ‘i he ngaahi me’a ‘o tu’a pea mole ai ‘a e ngaahi tapuaki fakalaumalie ‘oku tau ma’u mei he ‘Otua. ‘Oku mahu’inga ’a e ngaahi me’a ko ‘eni, he ko e ngaahi me’a ‘oku tau fakamahu’inga he mo’ui ‘oku nau ma’u ‘a e kotoa hotau taimi mo ‘etau tokanga, pea ‘oku nau fakae’a ‘a e lahi ‘o ‘ete falala ki he ‘Otua.  Ko e mo’ui loto mo’ua pe ko e tailiili ko e fehangahangai ia ‘o e mo’ui falala ki he ‘Otua.

As Jesus continued His Sermon on the Mount, He taught that religious behaviors, specifically giving, praying, and fasting-can be carried out through healthy or unhealthy motives. The inappropriate motive focuses on recognition and attention, while the appropriate motive is aimed at sacrifice and worship of God. Included in this teaching is Jesus' well-known "model prayer," which highlights prayer as a means of worshiping God, aligning ourselves with His will, and depending on Him to meet our daily physical and spiritual needs. The rest of Matthew 6 addresses our priorities from a Kingdom perspective.

Jesus was particularly concerned with showing how anxiety and worry can prevent us from receiving the full benefit of God's blessing. This is important because our priorities get the bulk of our time and attention, and they reveal our level of trust in God. Kingdom people should aspire to a singular focus on God and a loyalty to Him. Worry is the opposite of trust in God.

After Jesus' time in the desert, He launched into His public ministry by proclaiming the message that the kingdom of God was at hand, choosing His disciples, and preaching to and healing the crowds. With Matthew 5, the Gospel shifts to the records of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount-His teaching on how citizens of the kingdom of God should conduct themselves. The sermon begins with the Beatitudes, blessings God gives to people who cultivate certain spiritual attributes. They emphasize inner
motives rather than mere outward conformity. Jesus then shifted His message to the issue of behavior. Jesus addressed several Jewish laws and helped His disciples understand how right behavior is never the ultimate indicator. A person must have the right heart motive too. The commands of God remind us that He has a plan for how we ought to live our lives, and that plan is based in who He is and how He's treated us. Ultimately, we must remember that the God who demands perfection has already provided a means through the perfect sacrifice of His Son, Jesus.

Before Jesus begins His public ministry, Matthew introduces John the Baptist, who prepared the way for lesus by proclaiming a message of repentance and calling people to baptism as a symbol of their heart transformation. Jesus traveled to the river for John to baptize Him. Here, Jesus identified Himself with John's message and with the people. He came to save. It is interesting to note that all three Persons of the Trinity show up for this important moment, which affirms that Jesus is the Son of God and that His mission is anointed by the Holy Spirit. After His baptism, Jesus endured a time of temptation in the desert. This preparation for ministry reveals the reality of the spiritual battle raging around us and provides a concrete example of how God equips us to withstand temptations. When we face temptations, we too can trust in the character of God and the promises of Scripture, no matter how appealing that temptation might be.
