Relationships
are the focus of the next section of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus teaches
that His kingdom people are not to be judgmental and condemning of others. The
loving relationship we enjoy with God sets the standard for our relationships
with others. Jesus also taught that prayer is the primary way we function in
relationship with God, and He wants us to continually approach Him with our
requests. He delights to give us what we need. Jesus specifically teaches that
our prayers are powerful when we are persistent, when we believe God's promise,
and when we trust God's heart.
Jesus'
sermon builds to a climactic ending in chapter 7, when He challenged His
listeners to make a choice - would they follow Him through the narrow gate into the Kingdom, or would
they choose the wide gate that leads to ultimate destruction? The true
Christian is marked by obedience that flows from a real, personal relationship
with Jesus Christ.
