Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Wherever the grace of God has appeared to a man it has trained him to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present evil world: and, dear reader, it will do the same for you. “I cannot make this change," says one. Who said you could? The Scripture which we have quoted speaks not of what man will do, but of what God will do. It is God's promise, and it is for Him to fulfill His own engagements. Trust in Him to fulfill His Word to you, and it will be done.

“But how is it to be done?" What business is that of yours? Must the Lord explain His methods before you will believe Him? The Lord's working in this matter is a great mystery: the Holy Ghost performs it. He who made the promise has the responsibility of keeping the promise, and He is equal to the occasion. God, who promises this marvelous change, will assuredly carry it out in all who receive Jesus, for to all such He gives power to become the Sons of God. O that you would believe it!

Why have we not taught that one should certainly trust in the grace of God, and count our works as of no value: or that they are not ours, be they ever so good, but God's? For if the works were good according to the judgment of men, we would value our works so high that no one would be able to reward us. Therefore should we learn our humility from Mary: to submit ourselves wholly to God, so that if God speaks a word, we submit ourselves to it and believe it; although according to our understanding it appears impossible, we can say with her: "Lord, my mind is weak; but what Thou sayest, must take place. I am Thy servant; be it unto me according to Thy word!"

Now will every foolish question cease, for everyone would know before he does anything good (that is, what we call “good”) how much it will help him, but we will rest ourselves with trustful hearts wholly and unconditionally on the grace God, who knows what we need before we ask Him, and knows would of what is proper to give us.

For we are His work. By setting aside the contrary supposition, (Paul) proves his statement that by grace we are saved, that we have no remaining works by which we can merit salvation; for all the good works which we possess are the fruit of regeneration. Hence it follows that works themselves are a part of grace.

When he says that "we are the work of God," this does not refer to ordinary creation, by which we are made men. We are declared to be new creatures because, not by our own power, but by the Spirit of Christ, we have been formed to righteousness. This applies to none but believers. As the descendants of Adam, they were wicked and depraved; but by the grace of Christ, they are spiritually renewed and become new men. Everything in us, therefore, that is good is the supernatural gift of God. The context explains his meaning. We are His work, because we have been created, not in Adam, but in Christ Jesus, not to every kind of life, but to good works.

It is by God's power also that we are preserved in a state of grace. As grace is at first from God, so 'tis continually from Him, and is maintained by Him, as much as light in the atmosphere is all day long from the sun. Men are dependent on the power of God for every exercise of grace, and for carrying on the work of grace in the heart, for the subduing of sin and corruption, and increasing holy principles, and enabling to bring forth fruit in good works, and at last bringing grace to its perfection, in making the soul completely amiable in Christ's glorious likeness, and filling it with a satisfying joy and blessedness; and for the raising of the body to life, and to such a perfect state, that it shall be suitable for a habitation and organ for a soul so perfected and blessed. These are the most glorious effects of the power of God that are seen in the series of God's acts with respect to the creatures.

Paul asserts that the salvation of the Ephesians was entirely the work, the gracious work of God. But then they had obtained this grace by faith. On one side, we must look at God, and, on the other, at man. God declares that He owes us nothing, so that salvation is not a reward or recompense, but unmixed grace.

The next question is, in what way do men receive that salvation which is offered to them by the hand of God? The answer is by faith; and hence he concludes that nothing connected with it is our own. If, on the part of God, it is grace alone, and if we bring nothing but faith, which strips us of all commendation, it follows that salvation does not come from us. Ought we not then to be silent about free will, and good intentions, and fancied preparations, merits, and satisfactions? There is none of these which does not claim a share of praise in the salvation of men, so that the praise of grace would not, as Paul shews, remain undiminished.

Sola Gratia - Grace Alone - Ko e Kelesi´ pe   

The innocence, purity, and righteousness of Christ, which He offered up for our guilt and condemnation, deliver us from sin, guilt, and suffering; and we are reckoned worthy of the favor of God for the reason that Christ, who was absolutely free from all sinful inclination, was able to satisfy fully the justice of God. Although He is so high and holy, namely, very God, He nevertheless is our Savior.

From this it follows that His righteousness and innocence, which are wanting in us, are also imputed to us; for God made Him unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. So we now have access to God through Christ, because He is our Savior and a pledge of the grace of God unto us. He is our Surety, our Bondsman, our Mediator, our Advocate, and our Intercessor; yea, He is a perfect Savior to us. Those who have thus received the Gospel and assuredly trust therein are born of God; for the shortsightedness of the human mind can neither perceive nor understand the heavenly and mysterious council of God's grace.
