DEUTERONOMY 4:30-31
"WHEN YOU ARE IN TRIBULATION, AND ALL THESE THINGS COME UPON YOU IN THE LATTER DAYS, YOU WILL RETURN TO THE LORD YOUR GOD AND OBEY HIS VOICE. FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD IS A MERCIFUL GOD. HE WILL NOT LEAVE YOU OR DESTROY YOU OR FORGET THE COVENANT WITH YOUR FATHERS THAT HE SWORE TO THEM."

In car racing, officials wave flags of various colors to alert drivers. White usually means they're entering the last lap. The preacher in Hebrews waves his own white flag: "Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" (Heb. 1:1-2). The "white flag" is the phrase "these last days," which in the OT is acharit hayyamim ("the latter days"). In Deuteronomy 4, Moses speaks of these "latter days," as does Isaiah: "It shall come to pass in the latter days [acharit hayyamim] that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains" (2:2).
Since the Father spoke to us by his Son "in these last days," we have been living in the acharit hayyamim for the last two millennia. We are in the messianic era of world history. In these days, Jesus expands his kingdom until he comes again to establish the everlasting day of the resurrection.
O Lord, our shield, defend us
during these latter days with your gracious protection.
