“Our
Only Hope in Life and Death”
Fehu‘i
#1
Ko e hā ‘etau ‘amanaki pe taha ‘i he
mo‘uí mo e maté?
(What is our only hope in life and
death?)
‘Oku ‘ikai ‘o kitautolu ‘a kitautolu, ka
‘oku fakatou ma‘u hotau sinoʹ mo e laumalié ‘e he ‘Otuá mo hotau Fakamo‘ui ko
Sisu Kalaisi, ‘o tatau pe ‘i he mo‘ui mo e mate.
(That we are not our own but belong, body
and soul, both in life and death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ)
Loma
14:7-8
He tala‘ehai ‘oku ‘i ai hatau toko taha ‘oku mo‘ui ma‘ana; pea tala‘ehai ‘oku ‘i ai hatau toko taha ‘oku pekia ma‘ana pē.He
kapau ‘oku tau mo‘ui, ‘oku tau mo‘ui ma‘a e ‘Eiki; pea kapau ‘oku tau pekia,
‘oku tau pekia ma‘a e ‘Eiki: ko ia, pe ‘oku tau mo‘ui, pe ‘oku tau pekia, ko e
me‘a ‘a e ‘Eiki pē ‘a kitautolu.
Romans
14:7 – 8
For none of us lives to himself, and none
of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we
die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
Komeniteli (tohi vete)
- Sione Kalavini
Commentary - John Calvin
Kapau
leva ‘oku ‘ikai ‘o kitautolu ‘a kitautolu, ka ‘oku ‘a e ‘Otuaʹ, pea ‘oku mahino
leva ‘a e ngaahi kovi ke tau hola mei ai mo e ngaahi meʻa ke tatakiʻaki ‘etau
moʻui. ‘Oku ‘ikai ‘akitautolu: ‘oua
naʻa tuku ‘etau fakakaukauʹ mo hotau lotoʹ ke ofeʻi ‘etau ngaahi kaveingaʹ mo
‘etau ngaahi ngaueʹ. ‘Oku ‘ikai
‘akitautolu: ta u tokanga ke ‘oua naʻa ta u tulia ha kaveinga ngaue ke tau
kumi ‘a e meʻa ‘oku faingofua kiate kitautolu ... ‘Oku ‘ikai ‘akitautolu: ‘i he lelei taha ‘oku ta u malavaʹ, ta u
fakangaloʻi ‘akitautolu mo e ngaahi meʻa kotoa pe ‘oku tau maʻuʹ.
If we, then, are not our own but the
Lord’s, it is clear what error we must flee, and whither we must direct all the
acts of our life. We are not our own: let not our reason nor our will,
therefore, sway our plans and deeds. We are not our own: let us therefore not
set it as our goal to seek what is expedient for us… We are not our own: in so
far as we can, let us forget ourselves and all that is ours.
