משיח The Anointed One
KO E TOKOTAHA KUO PANI
1 SAMUEL 2:10
"THE ADVERSARIES OF THE LORD SHALL BE BROKEN TO PIECES; AGAINST THEM HE WILL THUNDER IN HEAVEN. THE LORD WILL JUDGE THE ENDS OF THE EARTH; HE WILL GIVE STRENGTH TO HIS KING AND EXALT THE HORN OF HIS ANOINTED."
1 SAMUEL 2:10
Though written differently - Meshiach, Moshiach, Mashiach, Messiah - all refer to "someone anointed." In Israel, there were many (small m) messiahs - that is, leaders over whose heads oil was poured to set them apart. Up until Hannah's song, all of them had been priests (e.g., Lev. 4:3), but she sings of the anointed king. This is Melek Meshiach, King Messiah, heralded in this prophetic song. To "exalt the horn" of the Messiah is to strengthen him for a victorious battle in which he will break in pieces the adversaries of his Father.
This ultimate enemy-shattering event took place at a recently vacated stone tomb in Jerusalem. All antihuman forces were dashed to smithereens by the risen and anointed Son (Ps. 2:1, 9). He rose to put all his enemies beneath his feet, to reign over the ends of the earth as the ruler of the kingdom of God, and to bless his beloved servants with the peace that passes understanding. In this Messiah, we are anointed with oil of the Spirit and the fragrance of joy.
"O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed!" (Ps. 84:8-9).
