“man is powerless”
For when we were still without strength, in due
time Christ died for the ungodly.
- Romans 5:6
But the natural man does not receive the things of
the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know
them, because they are spiritually discerned. – 1
Corinthians 2:14
Born Again – The Doctrine of Regeneration
Why is regeneration important?
1. Man
is flesh
2. Man
cannot see
3. Man
is powerless
He cannot enter the kingdom of God. Without
the divine birth, Jesus says that man is weak (Romans 5:6). If he is to have
the ability to see spiritually and to enter the kingdom by faith, it is
essential that God would work in his life to enable him to do so. In fact, this
is common biblical teaching. The natural man does not and cannot receive
spiritual reality (1 Corinthians 2:14). The carnal mind is at enmity with God,
and neither wills, nor is able to do, God’s will (Romans 8:6 – 7).
We rarely take this teaching sufficiently
seriously, perhaps because it cuts from under our feet the last vestiges of our
natural self-sufficiency. It highlights the biblical teaching that our
salvation is all of grace. The one thing necessary is the one thing we
ourselves cannot perform. It is this which gives point to our singing:
Nothing
in my hand I bring,
Simply
to thy cross I cling
Naked,
come to Thee for dress;
Helpless,
look to thee for grace;
Foul,
I to the fountain fly;
Wash
me, Savior, or I die (Augustus Montague
Toplady)
Only God can bring us to spiritual rebirth: Thou
must save, and I Thou alone
Challenge:
We can do
nothing on our own! So, we come to the only One who can…and out of His great
mercies, He has saved us! Glory to God Alone!
