Jesus Christ always puts faith in the seat of honor. When that poor woman came whose daughter was ill, He said, "O woman, great is thy faith!" He might have said, "Woman, great is thy love," for it was great love that made her force her way through the crowd and speak on her daughter's behalf, or "Great is thy patience," for when He called her "dog," she still stuck to Him, and would not depart; or He might have said, “Great is thy courage," for she said, “Yet the dogs eat of the crumbs.” Or He might have said, “Great is thy wisdom," for she was a wise woman to extract sweets out of the bitters, and to say, "Truth, Lord, but the dogs eat of the crumbs.”

But He overlooks all that and says, "Great is thy faith.” Well, if Christ thinks so much of faith, ought we not to esteem it most highly? Is it possible to think too highly of that jewel which Christ reckons to be the most valuable?

Bу faith alone can we become righteous, for faith invests us with the sinlessness of Christ. The more fully we believe this, the fuller will be our joy. If you believe that sin, death, and the curse are void, why, they are null, zero. Whenever sin and death make you nervous, write it down as an illusion of the devil. There is no sin now, no curse, no death, no devil, because Christ has done away with them.

In the Apostolic Creed we confess, “I believe in the holy Christian church." But if you want to believe your eyes you will find many shortcomings and offenses in the members of the holy church. You see them succumb to temptation, you see them weak in faith, you see them giving way to anger, envy, and other evil dispositions. "How can the church be holy?" you ask. It is with the Christian church as it is with the individual Christian. If I examine myself, I find enough unholiness to shock me. But when I look at Christ in me, I find that I am altogether holy. And so it is with the church.

We are dependent on God’s power through every step of our redemption. We are dependent on the power of God to convert us and give faith in Jesus Christ, and the new nature. 'Tis a work of creation; “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17). "We are created in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:10). The fallen creature cannot attain to true holiness, but by being created again, Ephesians 4:24: “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” It is a raising for the dead, Collossians 2:12-13: “Wherein ye also are risen with Him, through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”

Yea, it is a more glorious work of power than mere creation, or raising a dead body to life in that the effect attained greater and more excellent. That holy and happy being and spiritual life which is reached in the work of conversion is a far greater and more glorious effect than mere being and life.

Trust is the lifeblood of faith; there is no saving faith without it. The Puritans were accustomed to explain faith by the word "recumbency." It meant leaning upon a thing. Lean with all your weight upon Christ. It would be a better illustration still if I said, fall at full length, and lie on the Rock of Ages. Cast yourself upon Jesus; rest in Him; commit yourself to Him. That done, you have exercised saving faith.

Faith is not a blind thing, for faith begins with knowledge. It is not a speculative thing, for faith believes facts of which it is sure. It is not an unpractical, dreamy thing, for faith trusts, and stakes its destiny upon the truth of revelation. That is one way of describing what faith is. Let me try again. Faith is believing that Christ is what He is said to be, and that He will do what He has promised to do, and then to expect this of Him.

The Scripture treats this doctrine as a doctrine of very great importance. That there is a certain doctrine of justification by faith, in opposition to justification by the works of the Law, which the apostle Paul insists upon as of the greatest importance, none will deny; because there is nothing in the Bible more apparent. The apostle, under the infallible conduct of the Spirit of God, thought it worth his most strenuous and zealous disputing about and defending.

He speaks of the contrary doctrine as fatal and ruinous to the souls of men, in the latter end of the ninth chapter of Romans, and beginning of the tenth. He speaks of it as subversive of the Gospel of Christ, and calls it "another gospel," and says concerning it, “Though an angel from heaven preach it, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-9). Certainly we must allow the apostles to be good judges of the importance and tendency of doctrines; at least the Holy Ghost in them.

Is it faith to understand nothing, and merely submit your convictions implicitly to the church? Faith consists not in ignorance, but in knowledge—knowledge not of God merely, but of the divine will. We do not obtain salvation either because we are prepared to embrace every dictate of the church as true, or leave to the church the province of inquiring and determining; but when we recognize God as a propitious Father through the reconciliation made by Christ, and Christ as given to us for righteousness, sanctification, and life. By this knowledge, I say, not by the submission of our understanding, we obtain an entrance into the kingdom of heaven.

For when the apostle says, "With the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:10), he intimates that it is not enough to believe implicitly without understanding or even inquiring. The thing requisite is an explicit recognition of the divine goodness in which our righteousness consists.
